Many of them suffer as a result of diseases like arthritis or cancer. Coping with this kind of pain is not an easy thing. It requires physical therapy and a healthy constitution. Apart from that, the patient needs to be in constant touch with their doctor regarding medication, which forms a large part of chronic pain therapy.

Chronic pain medication falls into three main categories; painkillers, antidepressants and anticonvulsants. Of these three, the painkillers are the most important for many people. They are also the most tricky to prescribe, since different medication work best for different people, depending on their condition. Long-lasting medication is the most beneficial for those who are in constant pain. The Duragesic Patch is one such painkiller that is slow acting, releasing the painkiller into the body via a patch. However this drug has recently come under the spotlight because it has been abused for its high narcotic levels.

The physical therapy for chronic pain relief is just as important as the medication. This includes regular exercise and eating well-balanced, nutritional foods. Smoking and taking daytime naps are two things that should be avoided. Apart from that, patients also undergo occupational and behavioral therapy. These include doing yoga and other exercises to reduce stress. The bottom line is that these methods do not make the chronic pain go away. Instead, they teach the patient how to control it and live a productive life in spite of it.

Duragesic Pain Patch Settlement Reached

A jury awarded the family of a 38-year-old mother $16.6 million because of her death caused by duragesic pain patch overdose.

The woman suffered reflex sympathetic dystrophy and the drug was prescribed by her physician because of her chronic pain. Duragesic drug can have potentially mortal side effects if used incorrectly.

It is not recommended for all patients. For example, pregnant and nursing women shouldn't take Duragesic. It can't be used with certain medications as well. It's not surprising that a number of patients have unwittingly suffered because they were unaware of the warnings. Duragesic drug also hit the headlines when it was the subject of a product recall.

But now, Duragesic, along with a number of other synthetic drugs, is being linked with overdose cases. Recent reports have shown synthetic narcotics are being used to cut drugs like heroin. Unlike other drugs, these narcotics are made completely in the laboratory, which means that they are extremely potent. Duragesic, in particular, is a strong, slow-working pain killer that should only be used under medical advice. It isn't an everyday pain medication. Duragesic should only be used when chronic, long-term pain starts flaring up and your normal medication doesn’t work.

One of the primary dangers and main lures of Duragesic is the fact that it is almost 80 times more potent than morphine. When heroin is cut with this narcotic, it becomes incredibly strong which is why many users take an amount that they think is normal and end up overdosing. Patients use fentanyl when all other forms of pain relievers fail.

So what's the problem?
Unfortunately, serious side-effects haunt the use of many skin patches.

Following are the details of a Duragesic pain patch lawsuit that shows its harmful effects.
• A 28-year old man suffered chronic hip pain after a car accident and wore a Duragesic pain patch on his arm.
• He was later found dead at his computer and tests revealed that he had at least three times the lethal dose of fentanyl in his system. • His father filed a lawsuit on behalf of his deceased son.
• The jury in the Federal District Court in West Palm Beach found that Janssen Pharmaceutica Products and Alza Corporation were guilty in the young man’s death and awarded $5.5 million to the father.
This real life-story is an alert to the public to exercise extreme caution while using potent medication such as the Duragesic pain patch.

Duragesic Pain Patch: Miracle or Murderer?

It's true that the Duragesic Patch has also been abused by quite a number of drug addicts. The patch contains an opioid that is nearly a 100 times more potent than morphine. The result is a quick and often extremely dangerous high. The fact is it’s so easy to misuse also means that patients who really need the patch must be extra careful. The patch should not be used for pain that will clear up on its own in a few days- for example, if you're recovering from surgery, you shouldn't use the patch to help in coping up with the pain. The patch is designed for flare-ups that regular medication can't control.

When the Duragesic Patch was first released, it was thought to be a wonder for treating chronic pain. Unlike heavy drugs that often had to be ingested painfully, this patch released narcotic painkillers slowly which in turn, were absorbed by the skin. But the patch has recently come under attack for being the cause behind a number of fatalities. The FDA is still researching whether these deaths were due to patient misuse or if the patch was the true culprit.

It's also your physician's responsibility to ensure that you are in a position to take the Duragesic Patch. If any of your major organs is diseased, you have a head injury, or react to certain drugs, this patch might not be the right answer for you. Pregnant and breast-feeding women must also avoid the patch.

The Severity of Product Recalls and Drugs

Recalls are frightening and constantly occurring

There have been a number of recalls in recent years in the pharmaceutical industry. These recalls have included the Duragesic patch, Baxter's drug heparin, and many others. In all instances, these drugs were flawed drugs that either did not deliver on what they promised or they presented a dangerous risk to the public. This is why the recalls were initiated.

In some instances, the recalls were voluntary and done with in accordance with the FDA. Some may wonder why it is necessary for people to file lawsuits seeking damages against the pharmaceutical companies when the products have been voluntarily recalled. While it is a positive thing that the products have been recalled, dangerous and defective products should never have made their way to the public square in the first place. Recalls do not reduce the severity of the situation. Also, they do not correct the problems that existed prior to the recall. If you suffered a heart attack due to a dangerous product, you probably would not be forgiving if the manufacturer recalled the product. After all, that is what the manufacturer is supposed to do after delivering a poor product. Actually, the manufacturer was not supposed to deliver a poor product in the first place.

Also, the recall does not cover any medical expenses or pain and suffering a patient may have suffered as a result of the defective drug. In such instances, compensation will be required. After all, someone needs to pay the medical expenses that result from such negligence. It might as well be those individuals who are at fault for the situation. Thankfully, there are liability laws on the books that allow consumers and patients to seek damages in such a situation. With the help of a solid attorney, the ability to receive damages in such a scenario is greatly increased.

Duragesic: Pain and More Pain

Duragesic proves to be the pain medication false prophet.

People love their active hobbies and with good reason. Taking part in activities such as softball, tennis, skiing, and the like can aid greatly in improving health and vitality. While the benefits to these hobbies are vast, any type of physical activity can lead to soreness. In some instances, this soreness can expand to include chronic pain which can greatly impact a person's life. This is why people may reach for something to alleviate their pain. In the past, most pain relievers came in the form of pills. However, with much advancement in pharmaceuticals, pills have been replaced with alternatives.

One such alternative is the development of transdermal pain patches. These patches allow medicine to absorb through the skin. This provides a better way to ingest pain medicine since there is no need for the liver to metabolize pills. Of course, it is only a better way if the pain patch is effective. In the case of the Duragesic pain patch, the patch proved to be a very unsafe product.

The Duragesic pain patch is prone to leaking. That means the medicine in the patch will be released far faster than recommended. Because too much medicine enters the body too soon the patch comes with a risk for an overdose which has led to a great panic in the marketplace. Also, it has led to a number of lawsuits against the manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson, and deservedly so. The manufacturer defect in the patch was inexcusable and shouldn’t have went to store shelves.

Yet, the product did make it to the shelves and if you purchased Duragesic pain patch and suffered severe adverse effects then you may have cause for a lawsuit. A solid pharmaceutical product liability attorney has the potential to make the outcome of such a lawsuit swing in your favor.

Zero Tolerance and the Duragesic Patch

Despite the limited number of problems, the flaws in the Duragesic Patch are unacceptable.

The Duragesic patch proved to be the source of great controversy. Because the patch was designed with a structural flaw, the release of the medicine in the patch was accelerated. This led to many users of the patch receiving a rapid overdose of the medicine contained in the patch. Now, while this is a serious situation some may wonder if it really is all that serious. After all, it was not like 90% of the people who purchased the patch became ill. So, if only a small percentage of people who used the product became ill is there really any cause for alarm?

The answer to this question is, of course, yes. Remember, the product was not sold with the notice "This will help 9 out of 10 people and 10% of the users will get gravely sick." The manufacturer of the product claimed that the product would prove helpful to ALL the customers who used this pain patch. This should come as no surprise. This is what the pain patch is intended to do! Any deviations from this or any structural flaws in the design of the pain patch must then fall into the category of product liability. Therefore, the lawsuits that have been filed against this product after the unfortunate recall are warranted.

Consumers of all products must be afforded a certain level of safety from the products they purchase. This is true of virtually ever product on the market and it is most true with medicinal products. People purchase these products to improve the quality of their life and not to become sicker. So, there really is no excuse for any Duragesic patch to be released with a flawed structural design. Yet, this is what has happened and that is why the manufacturer is facing many legal threats.

The Dangers of the Duragesic patchDescription

The Duragesic pain patch is prone to causing overdoses.

The Duragesic patch is one of the most unique pain medication products on the market.. The original purpose of the patch was to deliver pain medication through the skin over an extended period of time. This was hardly a new or revolutionary concept. Many smoking cessation products followed the very same principle. The concept such a transdermal pain medication, however, was quite novel. While this was a highly anticipated product, it was manufactured with many problems. The main problem was that is was prone to leaks which, in turn, could lead to overdoses.

Again, the purpose of the Duragesic patch is to administer medicine over an extended period of time. The defect in the patch led to the medicine being released too quickly. As previously mentioned, this is no small problem since receiving too much of the medicine at the same time can yield adverse health affects. This is why the product comes with an FDA warning. Please note, warnings are not issued flippantly so this clearly demonstrates the seriousness of the problem.

While it is true companies do make mistakes and not every product they deliver is 100% perfect. But, when it comes to a pharmaceutical product one can not dismiss such problems. After all, people's lives are on the line as we are talking about potential overdoses. In some cases, the word "potential" would be inaccurate as actual overdoses have occurred. This, of course, is what has led to a number of lawsuits against the manufacturer of the Durgesic pain patch.
As with any manufacturer, a pharmaceutical company has the responsibility to provide a safe product. When the manufacturer does not do this it may be held liable in a civil suit. This is exactly what happened with the Duragesic patch. Hopefully, this will lead to increased levels of safety in the future.

Duragesic Pain Patch - Faulty Patches - Consumer Lawsuits

The Duragesic pain patch contains the narcotic Fentanyl in a gel that is released gradually into the patient’s bloodstream through the skin for chronic pain.

Duragestic Pain Patch with Fentanyl – Painkiller or Killer?
There is nothing worse than a medication gone seriously wrong. Consider the Duragesic pain patch – where the 25-microgram per hour patches with expiration dates on or before December 2009 were recalled because they were defective. Back in July 2005, the FDA issued a public advisory warning after around 120 deaths were reported from an overdose of drugs. A second warning was issued in December 2007. In fact, February 2008 saw the fifth recall of the product since 1994.

Duragesic is made by PriCara and Sandoz and is a prescription medication for chronic pain. The Duragesic pain patch contains the narcotic Fentanyl in a gel that is released gradually into the patient’s bloodstream through the skin for chronic pain. An overdose can cause severe side effects that could also be fatal. The Duragesic pain patches were recalled because some of the patches were likely to have a cut in the lining that had the drug.

Even though Duragesic pain patch is meant for acute chronic pain such as in cancer patients and can have adverse side effects in people who are not accustomed to these painkillers, there are doctors who prescribe it for headaches and as pain relievers post-surgery. Because of the faulty patches, the manufacturers have been facing several consumer lawsuits and have been paying out millions in damages.

What is even more worrisome is the fact that there is still no assurance that the manufacturing facility can produce Duragesic Pain Patches that are completely free of defect.

Duragesic Pain Patch Recall - Duragesic Patches - Fentanyl

With yet another Duragesic pain patch recall, it is clear that the issue has not been successfully resolved. A manufacturing problem leads to patches having a cut. This cut can lead to accidental leakage of fentanyl, an overdose of which can be fatal.

Duragesic Pain Patch Recall - Should You Be Concerned?

In February 2008, Johnson & Johnson issued yet another Duragesic pain patch recall. This time around the recall is related to the 25 microgram patches. The company has stated that due to some manufacturing problem, some of the Duragesic patches have a cut in the internal reservoir lining. Due to this cut there is always a danger that fentanyl gel could leak and expose people to danger.

Fentanyl
Fentanyl is very effective in treating cancer pain. It is eight times stronger than morphine. Duragesic pain patch was approved in 1990. The patch contains fentanyl in a pouch between the two membranes and is delivered via skin. Even though it is very effective, there have been several problems with the patches. Duragesic pain patch recall had been issued in 1994, 1996, and 2004. According to a study published in a medical journal, from 1998 to 2005 approximately 3,500 deaths related to pain patches have been reported to FDA.

Continuous Problems
Over the years FDA has issued several safety warnings over the patches. In December 2007, FDA had issued a warning stating that improper use of these pain patches can cause breathing problems and an overdose can prove to be fatal. FDA continues to receive reports of deaths after patients handled the patches inappropriately.

With so many deaths and recalls, no wonder Johnson & Johnson are constantly dealing with lawsuits. In November 2005, the company had stated that it is facing 72 lawsuits over the patches. With the latest Duragesic pain patch recall, the problem has again come to the forefront. After all, patients’ health cannot be put at risk continuously.

Duragesic Pain Patches - Fentanyl Pain Patches - Accidental Overdose Of Fentanyl

Duragesic pain patches continue to be in news for one reason or another. There have been several recalls due to a design flaw that leads to fentanyl leakage. Many people have died because they used it improperly.

Duragesic Pain Patches- Still A Cause For Concern

Duragesic pain patches have become a cause of concern due to an increasing number of people dying because of accidental overdose of fentanyl. The most recent recall of these patches was in February 2008. The patches were recalled after it was found that some of them had a cut along one side of the reservoir. This cut could allow the fentanyl gel to leak and this posed a serious health hazard for the user.

Duragesic pain patches are also referred to as Fentanyl pain patches. These patches are very effective in relieving chronic pain. They are mostly used by cancer patients. According to Robert J. Meyer, M.D, Director of the Office of Drug Evaluation II, patients who have developed some degree of tolerance to the opiate analgesic effects respond best to these patches.

It is not just the design flaw that is continuously causing the problem with these patches. FDA has noted that many deaths have occurred because some patients were not using the Duragesic pain patches as advised. Cases of people abusing the fentanyl drug have also come in the picture. That is why in 2005, FDA issued a public health advisory on the fentanyl patches. According to this advisory:

• Patches should only be used for moderate to chronic pain that lasts for a few weeks or longer.
• Doctors should prescribe these patches to patients who have already been taking opiate analgesics for some time.
• Only one patch should be applied at one time.

Patients should always follow the doctor’s advice as to how to use the Duragesic pain patches. Moreover, doctors should take care to educate their patients about the proper use of these patches. FDA should work with the companies manufacturing these patches to resolve the design flaw; otherwise these patches should be completely taken off the market.

Duragesic pain patch - skin patch - Duragesic

Duragesic pain patch containing narcotic fentanyl is a powerful painkiller. The medication has been in the headlines lately on reports of severe side effects causing deaths.

Useful Information On Duragesic Pain Patch
Duragesic pain patch is a transdermal skin patch [generic name is fentanyl]. Chronic pain sufferers use fentanyl to treat moderate to severe pain. Duragesic pain patch relieves pain by releasing a chemical substance called odium that has morphine like action on the body.

What Is A Skin Patch?
A skin patch or a transdermal patch is a medical adhesive patch placed on the skin to deliver a specific dose of medication through the skin onto the bloodstream.

How Effective Is Duragesic Skin Patch?
Duragesic is very effective as a painkiller as a single patch provides relief for almost 72 hours. Patients use fentanyl when other forms of pain relievers fail.

Side Effects
Duragesic patches can have many side effects. These include drowsiness, light-headedness, weakness, and euphoria to name a few. In some people, Duragesic can impair coordination and the ability to think. Due to a host of possible side effects, Duragesic needs to be used with extreme caution and under strict medical supervision.

FDA issued a public health advisory to alert patients and caregivers by highlighting important safety instructions.

Reports Of Adverse Side Effects

In 2004, FDA issued a safety alert informing recall by Janssen Pharmaceutica Products. The main problem with the product is associated with the leakage of the medicine inside the patches.

The Recall Story Of Duragesic Pain Patch

Doctors may suggest a Duragesic pain patch to patients suffering from chronic pain. These patches usually contain the drug called fentanyl. The user has to wear these patches on his/her back or chest. After the user wears it, the pain patch starts to release the pain relief medications slowly and this enters the bloodstream through the skin. These patches do not bring instant relief. It usually takes a couple of days to get the desired relief. The relief is achieved after the medicines reach a certain saturation level in the blood stream.

However, it is important for you to understand that some flawed Duragesic pain patches may result in several serious adverse reactions when the medication is delivered too quickly (in too high of a dose).

Recently, Johnson & Johnson has recalled its patch products from the market, as those products were prone to leak. In case of leakage, the patients may get exposed to a lethal dose of these medicines. The company announced the recall in the second week of February. It all happened when FDA found that out of every million, at least two patches leak.

This recall was conducted on a large scale. As per the FDA report, almost 32 million of the Duragesic pain patches were recalled. The recall list in this regard also includes generic Sandoz Inc. 25 microgram-per-hour pain patches and the Duragesic 25 microgram-per-hour patches. FDA has already issued warnings against the patches, as it was found that the inadequate use of these patches might result in serious adverse reactions, such as breathing difficulties and even death. FDA had to launch this investigation some two years back when over hundred deaths were reported because of the improper use of Duragesic pain patches.

Duragesic Patches - Duragesic Pain Patch - Pain Patch

Duragesic pain patch has been in news recently due to the recall issue. This is the fifth time that various versions of these patches have been recalled since they were introduced in 2004.

Duragesic Pain Patch - Still Another Recall
Duragesic pain patch have been recalled by Johnson & Johnson due to certain design defects that could lead to accidental overdoses. Johnson & Johnson has recalled 32 million of the fentanyl containing Duragesic Patches. The present recall includes all 25-microgram-per-hour patches. The defective patches have a sliced edge in the pouch which could result in fentanyl gel leaking from the pouch.

Its Use
Duragesic pain patches are used for treating persistent, moderate to severe chronic pain in opioid-tolerant patients who are two years old or above. Fentanyl is a very addictive opiate. In fact, it is 80 times more potent than morphine. Direct exposure to fentanyl can be very harmful. Direct exposure could cause breathing problems. Overdose of fentanyl could be fatal. That is why Duragesic pain patch recall should be taken seriously by patients and doctors.

Not The First Time
This is not the first time that Duragesic pain patch has been in news. In 2004, Janssen Pharmaceutica Products recalled their 75 microgram-per-hour patches due to leakage concerns. In December of 2004, FDA had issued an alert, warning patients and doctors about the high danger of accidental overdose related to Duragesic patches. In 2005, FDA had reported that it had received 120 reports of death associated with fentanyl pain patches.

Duragesic pain patches have caused serious injuries to patients because of the defects that allow accidental overdoses. This is a continuing problem with Johnson & Johnson Duragesic pain patch. This is the fifth recall of these pain patches. Lawyers of patients who have been victims of accidental overdoses of pain patches are recommending the recall of every version of these pain patches. With serious health issues a matter of concern, this is something that FDA should seriously think about.

Pharmaceutical drug recalls – Vioxx, Bextra, Celebrex

The duragesic patch is not the only pain killer that was FDA approved, that turned out to have dangerous side effects. For example:

Vioxx (rofecoxib), Bextra (valdecoxib) and Celebrex (celecoxib) are all in a class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs called COX-2 inhibitors primarily prescribed for the treatment of pain and tenderness associated with osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis. Initially, they were marketed with the advantage that they were able to avoid the gastrointestinal problems caused by other arthritis medications. Subsequent formal studies show these medications may be associated with an increased risk of serious cardiovascular events like heart attack or stroke particularly when they are used for long periods of time.

Vioxx was the first to come off the market in 2004 and Bextra and Celebrex soon followed.

Two studies appearing in April 16th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association are expected to be a catlyst for addressing the issue of drug compaines misrepresenting clinical data trial to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These studies are the latest in the long saga of Vioxx repurcussions. The studies assert that key data linking Vioxx was withheld from FDA regulators. Unfortunately, it appears that this is an indrutry wide issue as it is asserted in the study that Merck, Vioxx’s manufacturerer, is not the only offender.

If you or a loved one expereinced the negative side effects of any of these recalled antiinflammatory medication, an attorney may be able to assist you.

Pharmaceutical drug recalls and the FDA

When the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves a pharmaceutical medication, the clinical data from which the determination is made comes from studies submitted by the pharmaceutical companies. By its definition as a regulatory agency, the FDA does not conduct its own studies. Drug companies, such as in the case of Merck’s recall of its drug Vioxx, have been found to misrepresent data in order to ensure market readiness of their product. When manufacturers fail to test drugs adequately, users of the drug may experience side effects that cause injury or death. Each year, thousands of Americans are injured or killed as the result of taking dangerous prescription drugs. Once the FDA gets sufficient data that a drug may be unsafe, it will then be recalled, but not until it is too late for many people. The average time on the shelf between approval and FDA recall was five years. There is no telling how many unsafe drugs are currently on the market waiting to be discovered.

If you are currently taking a FDA recalled drug medication, do not stop or alter your dosage. Contact your doctor immediately about the risks and benefits associated with your prescription.

Overdoses and the Duragesic Patch Recall

How common are recalls along the lines of the Duragesic patch recall? So what was the actual problem with the Duragesic pain patch that led to the recall? Honestly, the vast majority of these pain patches was fine and performed the task in which they were intended. However, there were those errant patches that were defective and due to these defects the products became very dangerous. The leaks led to the wearer absorbing far too much pain medicine far too quickly and that is why the overdoses occurred. Additionally, this is why the product has been hit with so many lawsuits.

Overdoses and the Duragesic Patch Recall

How common are recalls along the lines of the Duragesic patch recall?
