The Dangers of the Duragesic patchDescription

The Duragesic pain patch is prone to causing overdoses.

The Duragesic patch is one of the most unique pain medication products on the market.. The original purpose of the patch was to deliver pain medication through the skin over an extended period of time. This was hardly a new or revolutionary concept. Many smoking cessation products followed the very same principle. The concept such a transdermal pain medication, however, was quite novel. While this was a highly anticipated product, it was manufactured with many problems. The main problem was that is was prone to leaks which, in turn, could lead to overdoses.

Again, the purpose of the Duragesic patch is to administer medicine over an extended period of time. The defect in the patch led to the medicine being released too quickly. As previously mentioned, this is no small problem since receiving too much of the medicine at the same time can yield adverse health affects. This is why the product comes with an FDA warning. Please note, warnings are not issued flippantly so this clearly demonstrates the seriousness of the problem.

While it is true companies do make mistakes and not every product they deliver is 100% perfect. But, when it comes to a pharmaceutical product one can not dismiss such problems. After all, people's lives are on the line as we are talking about potential overdoses. In some cases, the word "potential" would be inaccurate as actual overdoses have occurred. This, of course, is what has led to a number of lawsuits against the manufacturer of the Durgesic pain patch.
As with any manufacturer, a pharmaceutical company has the responsibility to provide a safe product. When the manufacturer does not do this it may be held liable in a civil suit. This is exactly what happened with the Duragesic patch. Hopefully, this will lead to increased levels of safety in the future.
